Unfortunately-named new WiiWare puzzler announced
Studio Walljump has announced Liight, a new WiiWare puzzle game based on casting same-colored light on puzzle pieces to create music. The concept sounds pretty cool: you position beams of colored light such that they cast right on all the pieces of that color on the board. Every piece adds elements to the soundtrack (which is available as MP3s on the website).
In order to pull this off, you have to combine colors and cast shadows over the game's 100 puzzles. It also includes a level editor and the ability to host speed contests. It actually sounds pretty cool! Except for the name. People could probably have figured out that it's a Wii game without the Wii pun in the title.

Taking a whirl around Tornado Man's stage
Some new screens from Tornado Man's stage have been released by Capcom and, well, it looks like classic Mega Man action. There's a screen full of deadly spikes that Mega Man must navigate, as well as that all-too-familiar close quarters combat with the stage's boss. By now, you should know what the deal is. So head into our gallery and check out the new screens.
WiiWare edutainment hits Japan this month
Cable Entertainment announced a new WiiWare game for Japan, and it's already scheduled to come out in September! Kappa-kun to Asobou: Kappa-kun to Mori no Nakamatachi (Play with Kappa: Kappa and his Forest Friends) is an animated picture book with voice narration. The game, which tells the story of a young kappa who wants to become human, also includes simple quizzes about the material.
As totally hardcore gamers, we in the gaming community tend to look disapprovingly at young kids' edutainment, but we think that children's "non-games" on WiiWare actually seems like a great idea. It's cheap (600 points), can be purchased from home, and might encourage a few parents to share a story with their kids.

Space Invaders Get Even with Dinobots
The cybernetic sauropod seen at the end of this stirring Space Invaders Get Even! trailer may not be the genuine Grimlock, but it may as well be. Or is it more of a Mechagodzilla riff? In either case, it's just one of the overblown, yet futile, weapons the puny hu-mans wheel out in an effort to stop the inevitable Space Invasion.
We love pretty much everything about the concept of this game, from the division into bite-sized chunks to the way it changes the usual neatly-stacked Invader lines to swarming masses, adding even more to the inversion of the normal Space Invaders experience.
VC Tuesday: WiiWare dominates retro gaming
This week on Japan's Virtual Console: Workjam's Tantei Jinguuji Saburo: Yokohama Minato Renzoku Satsujin Jiken (Detective Saburo Jinguuji: The Case of the Yokohama Harbor Serial Murder), the second game in what we now call the Jake Hunter series. And nothing else. Even the US got two Virtual Console games this week -- two first-party Virtual Console games, at that.- Tantei Jinguuji Saburo: Yokohama Minato Renzoku Satsujin Jiken (Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)
- Saikyo Ginsei Reversi (1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
- Hamaru Bowling (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)
- Gradius Rebirth (1 player, 1,000 Wii Points)

Joystiq talks with Telltale about Wii and the future
No, they aren't predicting the apocalypse or anything, but their future on the Wii seems almost certain. When asked if SBCG4AP sold more on the PC or Wii, they were quick to note that performance on Nintendo's system beat the PC. How was it to work with Nintendo?
"Working with Nintendo's been pretty good," commented designer Mark Darin. "All the help that Nintendo's been giving us and allowing us the opportunity to be on WiiWare has been great for our company and great for getting titles like SBCG4AP out there to a new audience who maybe isn't used to Adventure games. It's been a great partnership with Nintendo so far." Telltale also goes on to talk about the system's hardware and what challenges that presented, as well as Sam & Max on the console. So be sure to read the full interview over at Joystiq.

VC Friday: Convergence
Up until now, Virtual Console and WiiWare games in PAL regions have played nicely, each politely waiting their turn to appear on alternate Fridays. This week, they've both appeared on the same day, scrapping it out for your love. This is what we wanted to happen from the start, but since WiiWare appeared, Nintendo has had an excuse to offer less on the VC.Anyhow, that's another rant for another post. Critter Round-Up and the totally obscure MaBoShi: The Three Shape Arcade are the latest WiiWare additions, while the Hanabi Festival continues with Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa (parts of which look like some of our dreams -- eating through miles of cake) and Dig Dug. Is Dig Dug really worthy of a Hanabi Festival release? Hasn't it already appeared on every format known to man?
- Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa -- NES -- 600 Wii Points
- Dig Dug -- NES -- 600 Wii Points
- MaBoShi: The Three Shape Arcade -- WiiWare -- 800 Wii Points
- Critter Round-Up -- WiiWare -- 1000 Wii Points
Mega Man gets a new weapon
A few details have hit about another weapon power-up for our little robotic boy in blue: the Magma Shot. As one might guess, this is the reward for slaying one of the eight bosses, Magma Man, and allows Mega Man to shoot out multiple fireballs at once. Check out the power-up, as well as some screens of Magma Man's level, in our gallery below.
Mega Man 9 in Europe this year, too
For Europeans, they're usually left to wait a really long time before getting a game that has already released in other regions. With WiiWare, however, the story has been different. They got Dr. Mario Rx before North America did, and most of the other high profile titles have released there in relatively short time periods after the North American release. Now, another high profile title will see release in the same timeframe: Mega Man 9.
Word of this comes from Wiiz, who says Capcom has announced the title for "fall 2008" in Europe. We're willing to believe it, mostly because we want Chris to share in the joy we'll undoubtedly be feeling over in North America.

Alien Crush Returns, Bomberman Blast to make American debut at PAX
Tycho and Gabe, as well as all those other game companies, must be feeling pretty insecure right now, because they're all going to be upstaged by a humble WiiWare game. Or, at least, that would be the case if this year's Penny Arcade Expo were being attended exclusively by a crowd of weirdos just like us, because Hudson will have Alien Crush Returns and Bomberman Blast on display at their booth. This will be the first official public appearance in North America by either of these games!
Fishing Master World Tour and the already-released Deca Sports will also be on display. And Alien Crush Returns! Did we mention that one?

Space Invaders Get DLC overload

Our worst suspicions are confirmed. Space Invaders Get Even! will cost us weak, pathetic earthlings more than we initially expected. While the game always sounded like a bargain at 500 Wii Points, the hidden threat of extra downloadable content loomed at the back of our minds. Three stage packs released today in Japan (along with the game), each priced at 500 Wii Points, and bringing the total cost of Space Invaders Get Even! to -- gnaaargh! -- 2,000 Wii Points. Siliconera notes that the main title is "a short game."
We should have known all along, really. After all, this is Square Enix we're talking about here, renowned admirers of DLC. Needless to say, we'll yield and buy it all. Our defences have already succumbed toa hail of missiles the game's relentless charm offensive.

2D Boy discuss World of Goo pricing, dates, paranoia
World of Goo has been a squishy blip on our radar for ages now, but development will be wrapped up soon. WiiWare World got a chance to chat with 2D Boy duo Ron Carmel and Kyle Gabler, who revealed that development for the U.S. version will be complete in September, and that they're hopeful the game will be released Stateside in late October. Oh, and it'll cost more than 1,000 Wii Points. Wait, what?
So far, only Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King has dared to breach the 1,000 Wii Points mark, but Nintendo clearly thinks 2D Boy's gooey, beautiful puzzler is worth the extra pointage. On the bright side, North Americans won't be paying as much as Europe, where the game will be retail-only, cost €40 (£31), and has been delayed until Q1 2009. The European version will have a sixth chapter, however, one that takes place on the moon.
Amongst all the new details to digest (also worth mentioning: the two-player co-op mode now accomodates four players), Gabler seems like he'll be relieved when the game is out of the door. "I like to hate the game as much as possible, and believe that it's ugly, with horrible gameplay, and that nobody will like it," he admitted. "If this were a human relationship, it would be very unhealthy, and World of Goo would cry a lot." Man, that brings back memories.
North America soon to join in on the Alien Crushing
If you thought Hudson was done announcing WiiWare games, you were dead wrong. In fact, Bomberman Blast was just a warmup for the real WiiWare announcement, which we all knew was coming, but we're elated to see: Alien Crush Returns is coming to North America! A few new screens came with the announcement, which you can find in our gallery. Chris Kohler's impressions of today's Japanese release suggest that this news is, in fact, a good thing.
According to the press release, "Alien Crush Returns is the only pinball game for WiiWare that lets gamers compete head to head online." It also happens to be the only pinball game for WiiWare. As with Bomberman Blast (and Star Soldier R), Hudson will host periodic online tournaments, starting with one near the unspecified launch period.
